Objectives

Godalming and its surrounding lands are special. Set in the valley of the River Wey, with its unique Lammas Lands, the town is a vibrant place which retains a sense of community and attracts many visitors.

The Godalming Trust is a voluntary organisation promoting high standards of planning, conservation and regeneration for the benefit of the local community in Godalming and Farncombe. It exists to bring together all who are interested in the town and its environs, aiming to stimulate interest in their history and character, and to promote a healthy sustainable balance between preservation of ancient buildings and new developments in building and landscaping.

Activities to support these aims are:

  • Reviewing all significant planning applications, supporting those that enhance and blend with the environment and opposing those that detract from it.

  • Maintaining a campaigning role, taking part in and initiating discussion on issues concerning the quality of life in the town. Pedestrianisation on the High Street on Saturday is a notable example

  • Hosting public meetings to ensure important issues can be openly discussed by residents. These have attracted attendance of over two hundred

  • Organising the town's annual Heritage Open Days

  • Leading town walks on various dates in the summer

  • Representing Godalming to bodies such as the CPRE and the Civic Trust

  • Arranging visits to other local towns and cities

  • Sponsoring the prestigious biennial Trust Awards for outstanding developments and conservation work in the town

  • Co-operating with Godalming Museum on events such as a Summer Lunch and a series of lectures

The Godalming Trust is an independent body, not funded by the Council, and all activities are organised and staffed by volunteers. Its campaigning role needs the financial support and interest of all those who care for the Godalming of today and tomorrow.
